Advances in life expectancy and rising cost of living are making retirement less of a fixed milestone and more of a moving target. According to Northwestern Mutual, the average American believes they need $1.26 million to comfortably retire today – up from $951,000 from 2020, and dramatically more than in previous decades.

As the cost of retirement climbs, more Americans are delaying their exit from the workforce. Gallup data shows workforce participation rising among older adults, with the average retirement age increasing from 59 in the early 2000s to 62 today. In some occupations, the delay in retirement is even more pronounced, with adults over the age of 65 accounting for more than one in four workers.

The list of occupations with the oldest workers cuts across income tiers and skill profiles. High-paying, high-prestige jobs like chief executive, judge, and attorney exhibit delayed retirement patterns associated with long career arcs and human capital accumulation. At the other end of the income spectrum, meanwhile, flexible, people-oriented roles like clergy, tour guides, and school bus drivers attract a disproportionate number of older workers. A closer look at the data reveals the jobs workers don’t want to retire from.

To determine the jobs that workers don’t want to retire from, Nifty 50+ reviewed labor force data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Current Population Survey. Detailed occupations were ranked based on the percentage of workers who are 65 years and older as of 2024. Supplemental data on average annual salary is from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program and is for 2024.
