These older music stars had the longest gaps between Top 40 hits
Musical fame is notoriously brief. Stars rise and fall quickly, shining intensely for a few years before fading into darkness. While some artists may live on in record collections and oldies rotations, very few translate that cultural staying power into continued mainstream radio play and multi-decade success on the Billboard Hot 100.

Some artists, however, transcend eras. A handful of veteran performers have mounted major comebacks in career twilight, returning to the top of the charts after decades of obscurity. After 16 years off the charts, Barry White returned to the Top 40 in 1994 with “Practice What You Preach,” a soulful ballad that fused his trademark spoken-word style with 90s R&B production. Roy Orbison brought his operatic vocals to a younger generation with “You Got It” in 1989, returning to the Top 40 after nearly 23 years. In some instances, legacy acts return to the charts through collaboration with younger artists. Examples include Carly Simon re-recording her vocals to “You’re So Vain” for a song with Janet Jackson and Ozzy Osbourne teaming up with Post Malone and Travis Scott on “Take What You Want.” These partnerships help bridge stylistic and generational gaps, introducing legendary voices to new audiences. A closer look at the data reveals the biggest musical comebacks by older artists.
To determine the biggest musical comebacks by older artists, Nifty 50+ reviewed data on song performance from Billboard magazine. Artists were ranked based on the gap in time between the consecutive Top 40 hits, based on the top 40 spots on the Billboard Hot 100. Only artists who were at least 50 years old at the time of their comeback song were included. Holiday songs and older releases that became popular years after their initial release were not considered. Chart data is current through December 6, 2025.
